How to Get From Bogota International Airport to the City Center
Bogota International Airport is also known as El Dorado International Airport. It is situated about 15km west of Bogota and serves both domestic and international flights. The airport is connected to the city center by the
Avenida El Dorado
which is one of Bogota’s finest roads. A traveler can get from the airport to the city center aboard a taxi or a bus.
Taxis
The most comfortable way to get from the airport to the city center is by means of taxi. Taxis are safe, affordable and well regulated. The taxi booths are located to the right of the international arrivals terminal. At the taxi booths travelers point out the destinations they want to go to and then vouchers are printed for them indicating the price they have to pay. A traveler then picks a taxi from the line and explains to the driver his/her destination. At the end of the journey the passenger only pays what is printed on the ticket and no more. The average fare to the city center is US$ 13. Some hotels can arrange to pick up their guests from the airport.
Buses
A traveler can also get to and from Bogota Airport by bus. Just outside the terminal there are bus stops (paradero) with buses passing by. Buses that ply the airport route are marked
Aeropuerto
which means airport in Spanish. They drop passengers from the airport at the city center, from where you might still need a taxi to your specific destination. A bus will either drop you at the main terminal,
Terminal de Buses,
or at
El Portal del Notre
. Bus fare costs around US$ 6-7.
Buses are the cheapest way to get into town but they are not advised for people going to Bogota for the first time or those that are only slightly familiar with the city. This is because buses indicate only the main places they will be passing by although passengers can always ask the driver to drop them off at a particular point. Most bus drivers are always quite friendly and will readily assist.
The ride from the airport to the town center lasts approximately 40 minutes. If you arrive at night it is better to take a taxi than a bus for safety reasons. Note that there are no private bus services from the airport to the city center.
Bogota Airport has two terminals, the main El Dorado terminal which serves both local and international flights, and the Puente Aerea terminal which only serves Avianca flights (the national flag carrier). To connect between the two terminals one can use a free shuttle bus which takes only about 15 minutes; if you are in a hurry you can opt for a taxi.
